The Box Social played host to another array of great live music this weekend at the fourth “Inside the Box” event. This week it was all about the voice and with the fantastic acoustics at such an intimate venue we were in for a treat.
Katie Wedgewood kicked the evening off with the enchanting sounds of her ukulele paired with her amazing voice. Katie really demonstrated her variety with a cover of arguably one of the most depressing songs of all time, Radiohead’s ‘Creep’, followed swiftly by the Jungle Book classic ‘I wanna be like you’ bringing a cheerier atmosphere to the room. After switching to her guitar, Katie rounded off her set with a beautiful rendition of Johnny Cash’s ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’ as well as some original songs.
Salar Butt was next up, his powerful voice was quick to grab the attention of the room. Salar’s rendition of Jimi Hendirix’s ‘All Along the Watchtower’ perfectly showcased his range, as well as a softer cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean.’ A personal highlight was Salar’s take on the Stevie Wonder classic, ‘Superstition’, truly an acoustic treat.
In between recording their upcoming EP and preparing for The Pogues’ ‘Shot at Fame’ show at the O2 Academy on Wednesday, Many Moons treat ‘Inside the Box’ to a sneak preview of some of their brand-new songs being currently recorded. Front man Patrick Kelly relished the opportunity to play at such an intimate venue bringing with him an Irish charm and personality that filled the room.
After one act unfortunately dropped out, the man himself Sam Wright was on hand to save the day. After rushing down from a gig at North Shields, Sam was still full of energy and jumped straight into a set of fantastic original music. A soulful sound with some Ed Sheeran-esque urban influenced breakdowns, Sam brought a different edge to the night and a perfect note to end the evening on.
