After a long period of silence, Teesside rapper Shakk dropped a new music video for his “Liquid Water” freestyle last week, quickly taking Facebook by storm; the video has been viewed over 8,000 times at the time of this article being posted and that figure continues to rise. Rather than sticking to the usual ‘Artist of the Week’ format, we decided to get in contact with Shakk to find out more about what he has in store for the rest of 2018.
Ride Music: You performed live for the first time in three years a few months ago, why did you decide to take a break from music and what inspired you to come back?
Shakk: It was more of a transitional period for me. I was still writing a lot and creating music, however it was behind the scenes and if I am honest I wasn’t taking myself seriously, I limited my beliefs. It was a difficult few years and I was in a dark place but ultimately I knew my potential deep down. I’ve put too much work in. I guess you could say a fear of failure inspired me to get back on the horse with everything I’ve got.
Ride: You recently dropped the visuals for your track “Liquid Water”, could you tell us about some of your inspirations behind the lyrics?
Shakk: As much as I hate to sound ‘cliché’, I draw inspiration from absolutely everything. I see a lot of good and bad in this world, I use that as my source in addition to my personal experiences and journey so far.
Ride: You’ve also teased more videos, could you tell us a little about them and when they’ll be released?
Shakk: Absolutely, I will be releasing one more freestyle exclusively for Facebook and YouTube on Wednesday 23rd May and then I will release two further music videos which are from my I AM YOU EP within a two week period.
Ride: When’s the EP due out and what can you tell us about it?
Shakk: My EP I AM YOU is available for pre order on iTunes etc from the 29th May and it will be released on the 6th June. This one is special, that’s all I can really say. I’m here to make a statement and to leave a legacy. This means more to me than just music. It’s my life. It’s the only way I really know how to express myself. I’m really invested in my craft and my E.P will showcase my diversity and my ability to capture a broad demographic but above all my mission is to show people from all walks of life that we have more in common than we tend to realise.
Ride: Finally, you’ve got a lot more live shows coming up this summer, are you looking forward to those?
Shakk: I absolutely love live shows! In my opinion it’s the best part of being an artist. I’m super excited for them. It’s my chance to show people what I’m all about. The more shows the better!
