With his attention focused on live shows and his forthcoming documentary, it had been almost a year since Newcastle based rapper J Smirk posted any music on Soundcloud. Then, out of nowhere, just over a week ago J posted a new track, “Depression”, followed by “drip when i trip” last week.
These two new tracks have a distinctly different sound to the rest of J’s back catalogue; both tracks come with trappy production, “drip when i trip” backed by a looped guitar riff and “Depression” accented by heavy bass hits. They’re both what you could describe as on the current “Soundcloud wave” – similar to artists like Lil Xan, Juice WRLD, Yung Lean, Nothing, Nowhere., ect. – still a relatively new artist, it feels like J might have really found his sound with these tracks. The standout element on both these songs has to be J’s intoxicatingly melodic vocals, the progression from his earlier tracks is clear.
