Drill is quickly becoming one of the most dominant genres in the UK, punching its way from the underground scene in London to the Top 40 in a short few years – see the work of Headie One for example. Its dark beats, intoxicating flows and macabre lyrics have peaked the interest of many wanna-be rap stars, leaving grime looking like the kid that nobody want’s to play with anymore.
Still in its infancy, drill has slowly made its way to our humble rap scene here in the North East with a wave of budding new artists. “2 Shots” is one of the NE’s highest quality drill tracks to date. A four-way collab debuted on GRM Daily, this single features some fresh faces as well as a couple fans may recognise. Dredz first made an impact back in 2015 with hometown reppin’ single “NCL” and 2016 follow-up “Friendly”, but has lacked consistency over the years despite his clear ability. This track hopefully means a new lease of life for his music career.
J.North has already made a mark on the NE drill sound as part of the popular collective 243, another set of artists with bags of potential. J’s flow a unique sound due to his accent shining through. We haven’t come across Lumz or Mabzy before, but they both pull their weight on this one. Whichever of the two are on the hook deserve massive props, it really holds the track together whilst creating that stone-cold, nonchalant ‘don’t fuck with us’ vibe that tones the entire song.
