Single Review: “Closer” – Tray Nova

Born and raised in the gritty streets of Chicago, Tray Nova is the latest artist from The Windy City to start turning heads around the world with his music.

However, Nova has set out to go against the grain and make music that exudes positive energy in the city famous for its violent drill scene. “Closer” is the lead single from Nova’s debut EP ‘Note To Self’ and it’s one of the slickest tracks you’ll hear all year.

Taking inspiration from jazz, soul and classic hip-hop, Nova creates this perfect blend of smooth sounds that lend themselves perfectly to his story-telling lyricism and laidback delivery.

Nova combines his effortless old school swagger with shimmering production to create a warm 90’s throwback vibe on “Closer”. Tackling the super relevant issue of being separated from your loved ones by time and distance, “Closer” isn’t all about the vibes, it’s got some real lyrical value too – Nova gets the balance perfect on this cut.

“Closer” is one of our favourite tracks of 2021 so far, it’s a throwback to swaggering 90’s R&B with a soulful hip-hop edge. We can’t wait to see what Tray Nova and the rest of his 2ill crew have in store for the rest of the year!
