Armed with a new self-assured sound, DANGEROUS is the slick latest track from one of New Zealand’s most respected faces in rap; the one and only Tom Francis.
Not familiar with the king of Kiwi rap? Let us break down his résumé real fast. After smashing onto the rap radar practically overnight in 2016, Tom hasn’t let his foot off the gas since. As the only independent artist in the Southern Hemisphere who has worked with Snoop Dogg, Tom is known for bagging the biggest collabs.
His 2016 debut album knocked Drake off his #1 spot in the New Zealand iTunes chart and held the position for three weeks. The certified platinum album (yeah, platinum, you read that right) had guest features from Twista, Dizzy Wright, Joyner Lucas and On Cue.
His 2018 sophomore album, aptly named ‘The Follow Up’ is packed with names such as Royce Da 5’9, Tyler Thomas, OnCue, Jean Deaux, J.Tek and Spenda C. It was during the recording of this album that Tom was invited to collaborate on hit song Lifestyle with the one and only Snoop Dogg.
Now in 2021 Tom is levelling up his sound again with an aggressive new energy, mixing hard-hitting beats, heavy basslines, quick-fire technical raps and slow acoustics. His bars are always down to earth and relatable, with an edge that let’s you know that if you get on the wrong side of him things can get messy quick. That’s exactly what Dangerous is all about, it’s that vibe in a nutshell.
Reminding us an old school Tyga club banger, Dangerous sees Tom spit with venom, going bar for bar with finesse before hitting us with the simple but extremely effective chorus. Listening to this one makes you feel like you’re the shit, it’s got that laidback but volatile gangster attitude.
Dangerous is a sublime slice of uber-cool edgy club hip-hop and charts an exciting new path for Kiwi rap superstar Tom Francis. We can’t wait to see what his next move is going to be… until then, this one stays on repeat!
